Having struggled with depression and anxiety for many years myself, I have always looked for ways to make the most of my life. My curiosity for all forms of well-being, mental health and ways to cope with stress comes from a very personal level and it is only when I embraced the holistic approach to health - mindfulness practices, going through my own therapy, ameliorating my relationship with food and exercise that I finally felt in balance.
I started my pursuit of well-being by studying Psychological Counselling at Bahçeşehir University in Istanbul, where I graduated with an honours. Following my undergraduate degree, I earned a Master of Science within the renowned Division of Medicine at University College London (UCL) in Eating Disorders and Clinical Nutrition. (UCL is the top ranked institution in London, and the Division of Medicine is ranked top 10 worldwide according to QS World University subject rankings. ) Shortly after my graduation I started and completed by second masters degree in the field of Clinical Psychology at İstanbul Kent Üniversitesi.
At UCL, I wrote my Masters dissertation on the Range of Electrocardiographic Abnormalities Among Adult Inpatients with Anorexia Nervosa, and was chosen to present my findings at the 2019 European Council on Eating Disorders at Sorbonne University. While I was at Bahçeşehir University, I started researching the association between our food and our mood, and enrolled at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition to form a base for my nutritional understanding.
Following my masters degree, I received the title of Qualified Associate Nutritionist by the Association for Nutrition—the only register of qualified nutritionists recognized by Public Health England and NHS Careers.
During my time in London, I completed my clinical attachment at the North East London NHS Foundation Trust, a unit that provides an extensive range of integrated community and mental health services for people with eating disorders living in the London boroughs. Here I experienced working directly with adolescents with eating disorders within a multidisciplinary team.
I recently completed Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) training by the founder of CBT Istanbul Dr. Emel Stroup, a clinical psychologist certified by the American Psychological Association and a fellow member of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. The training encompasses the use of CBT in various specialized areas such as depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, and social phobia.
I then went on to complete training on CBT-E, enhance congitive behavioral therapy for eating disorders at the Center for Research on Eating Disorders at Oxford University.
I also wanted to expand my knowledge of the use of these approaches for children and adolescents and therefore completed the CBT Training for children and adolescents by Dr. Vahdet Gormez, a child and adolescent psychiatrist which completed his education in the Oxford School of Psychiatry.
Concurrently, I am learning from the founder of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) Dr. Marsha Linehan and her team of experts on how to integrate a skills based approach into my practice. This approach focuses on the core components of DBT: mindfulness, interpersonal skills, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance and ways of teaching clients to implement these skills into their everyday life.
I believe that for optimum well-being one must integrate physical activity, healthy eating patterns, and mental health approaches. Which is why I am also a certified AntiGravity Yoga Instructor and have been enjoying practising and teaching this form of yoga since the year 2016.
In my own private practice Vital Habits I use personalized psychological counselling by integrating Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Skills and nutritional counseling to increase the well-being of my clients.
